Strong Cores Rock

Balance is a key factor in health planning as you age. Learn 4 tips to improve balance below!

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about a study that claims that whether you can stand on one leg for at least 10 seconds as an adult is a good indicator of your health. While this “test” might not be as useful as the ones you may get in a lab, being able to stand on one leg does provide you with information about balance.

Balance results from strong muscles, especially in your stomach, and is very important for your health. Having great balance makes you more steady on your feet and less likely to fall. This is especially important as you get older because falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in people over 65 years old.

Want to build a stronger core? There are 4 main muscles in your core and here are some great ways to begin strengthening them and improving your balance:

  • Use a stability ball and do these exercises

  • Do a plank or try these variations (make sure not to let your hips sag and keep your body straight)

  • Do yoga, which incorporates a lot of balance and is beneficial for your digestive system

  • If you’re looking to work on your balance outside, paddle boarding is a fun way to get your body moving and there are many businesses that rent them out so you don’t have to buy one.
